HawthornCrataegus – positive physiological effects

Hawthorn can be especially useful in restoring balance between the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems, which is essential in managing stress. It acts directly on the heart. It may help reduce rapid heartbeat (palpitations) during stressful situations, and may also assist in mild blood pressure reduction, which in turn alleviates some of the physical symptoms of stress. [01.]

Linden flowerTiliae flos – positive physiological effects

Linden flower has been used in traditional folk medicine for centuries as a calming, stress-relieving, and sleep-supporting remedy. It contains flavonoids – such as quercetin – mucilage compounds, and essential oils – like farnesol – that soothe the nervous system without causing drowsiness.

Linden helps quiet an overactive nervous system, which can be particularly useful in cases of anxiety, nervousness, exam tension, or stressful life situations. It is especially effective for nervous heart symptoms, mild palpitations, and chest tightness with no organic cause. [02.]

Lemon balm leafMelissa officinalis – positive physiological effects

Lemon balm has a mild sedative effect and supports the balance of the nervous system. Its active compounds include flavonoids, rosmarinic acid, and essential oils – such as citral, geraniol, and linalool – that inhibit neural overstimulation.

Lemon balm reduces tension, irritability, and restlessness. It is gentle and does not impair mental performance. It is particularly effective when sleep disturbances are caused by stress or overthinking. [03.]

Chamomile flowerMatricaria chamomilla – positive physiological effects

Chamomile contains apigenin, a special flavonoid that binds to the brain’s GABA receptors, producing a mild calming effect. It reduces nervous tension and irritability, soothing the central nervous system.

Chamomile helps you relax and fall asleep more easily, especially when mental restlessness or physical tension disrupts sleep.

Chamomile is suitable for the daily release of stress and may help relieve psychosomatic symptoms, such as abdominal pain, chest tightness, or headaches. A common stress or panic symptom – the “tight stomach” – is also well addressed by chamomile. [04.]

Hop cone • Humulus lupulus – positive physiological effects

The calming and sleep-inducing effects of hops have been known in folk medicine for centuries. Its active ingredients – such as humulone, lupulone, and prenylflavonoids – inhibit nervous overstimulation.

Thanks to its GABA-supporting effect, hops relieve nervous tension and promote relaxation. It is one of the strongest herbal sedatives.

It helps combat daytime nervous tension, stress, and mental exhaustion. It reduces excitability and irritability. Hops may decrease the frequency and intensity of panic attacks, especially when physical symptoms dominate, such as rapid heartbeat, muscle tension, or pressure sensation. [05.]

Lavender • Lavandula angustifolia – positive physiological effects

Lavender’s main active ingredients – linalool and linalyl acetate – have scientifically proven GABA-supporting effects, which make lavender effective for reducing anxiety, easing tension, and supporting mental balance.

Lavender reduces mild to moderate anxiety, even at levels comparable to medications, but without side effects.

It supports mental focus and emotional stability, making it suitable for daytime use. Lavender improves sleep depth and quality, and enhances parasympathetic (restful) nervous system activity. [06.]

Garden thymeThymus vulgaris – positive physiological effects

Thyme contains thymol, carvacrol, and other essential oils, which may stimulate dopamine and serotonin production – improving mood and reducing anxiety.
Thyme may ease tension and reduce stress hormone levels. Due to its mild calming effect, it supports falling asleep and restful nighttime sleep.
